Welcome to the CML Educator!

The CML Educator is a site to help you learn more about critical media literacy (CML) through blog posts, articles, presentations, and resources to add to your teaching tool belt.

I created this website for a few reasons: 1) As I delved deeper into CML, I found myself gathering resources and articles from a variety of sources and had a difficult time organizing it all; 2) I’m passionate about CML pedagogy, and I want to encourage other educators to be passionate about it as well by providing a hub for learning and resource sharing; 3) Since CML is a primary research interest of mine, I have created several CML resources myself through articles, book chapters, and conference presentations, and I wanted a simple location to store them all.

I don’t claim to be the quintessential CML educator, but I strive for my pedagogy to be increasingly marked by empathy, criticality, and excellence; centering my pedagogy around CML pushes me toward these ends. There are many other CML educators who have inspired my work and have developed resources of their own, and I hope to direct you toward them through this platform so they can inspire you as they have me.

The “I” here is me, Seth D. French. My educational background is in Secondary English Education and Teaching English as a Second Language, but I am currently in the process of completing my three-article dissertation to earn my Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Arkansas. I present on CML at ICML, NCTE, and ELATE, where I learn from many other educators both inside and outside the English discipline to refine my teaching practice through new strategies and resources.

CML educators who I have learned a great deal from include Jeff Share, James Trier, Antero Garcia, Chris Goering, Ernest Morrell, Renee Hobbs, Doug Kellner, Steven Funk, Nicole Mirra, and Danielle Filipiak.
